Naná Vasconcelos
Juvenal de Hollanda 'Naná' Vasconcelos, born on August 2, 1944 in Recife. He passed away on March 9, 2016. Naná Vasconcelos was a Brazilian Latin jazz percussionist, singer and berimbau player. He has collaborated with numerous musicians, including Pat Metheny, Don Cherry and Gato Barbieri.
The berimbau consists of a stick, an iron string and a hollowed out gourd. By rhythmically striking the string with a stick, a singing sound is created.
Saudades
Saudades was originally released in 1979. ECM has decided to make this reissue of material from their long history because, in their perception, this artist had a very innovative way of making music and therefore had a major influence on musical creativity. The LP contains only 5 titles, including the 18-minute O Berimbau.
Judgement
ECM has delivered a great product with this reissue. Beautiful spatial shot, detailed.
All instruments are individually placed tightly and have a nice deep stage. My favorite is the 10-minute Cego Aderaldo with a prominent place for Egberto Gismonti's Super 8 string guitar and percussion in the full width and depth between the speakers.
Delicious.
